This family friendly dining room received french doors, replacing a set of windows, which open to a new deck overlooking the back garden. This dining room is part of a full scale renovation of a heritage house. We added crown moulding but retained the original oak floors, which were refinished and stained a mid walnut colour, helping to ground the design. The dining room leads through to the living room via a wide archway, which was redesigned with new door casings and baseboard. We wanted the living and dining room to have complementary tones of white but at the same time wanted each room colour to be a different shade to add more visual interest. As the dining room is north facing and the living room has south and west facing windows, the quality of the light is quite different in each room which affects how you perceive the wall colour. We ended up having custom wall colours mixed for each of the rooms to achieve the desired effect.

Interior Design with Budget Friendly Choices

The furnishings of the room are an eclectic mix of old and new. As one of the last rooms to be furnished in the house, we made budget friendly choices wherever possible. The side board, which fits perfectly into the alcove, is an Ikea find which was given personality by adding the custom welded legs. The dining table is custom made with reclaimed 150 year old barn wood and has welded legs matching the side board. The table is designed to easily seat 8 people, and more in a pinch, for this large family. The seagrass carpet adds additional texture in the calming and overall neutral room design. The abstract painting above the side board is painted by the home owner and picks up on some of the colours used in the neighbouring living room decor. The large scale natural wool wall hanging is designed and handmade by the home owner’s daughter. The quirky flower lights above the dining room arrived as a flat pack and were put together like a 3 dimensional puzzle giving ample illumination for dining and family activities whilst being a charming addition to the room. Our home styling brought this room together with fresh flowers on the side board, and décor that layers a mix of natural materials.
